Gordon M. Sherman
Gordon Sherman retired on January 2, 1999 with over 43 years combined military and civilian Federal service. During the last 23 1/2 years of this period he occupied the position of Regional Commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA) for eight (8) southeastern states. In this role, he was responsible for supervision, coordination, executive leadership, and effective and efficient administration of the Social Security program. This involved the payment monthly of benefits to 11 million people for a total of over $70 billion annually through a network of 300 plus offices with total staff of more than 12,000 Federal and State employees. In addition, he was instrumental in the early implementation and administration of the Medicare program from initiation in 1965 until formation of the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) in 1977, now the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
As a career senior governmental executive, he has received many honors for noteworthy accomplishments and outstanding leadership. Among the many honors awarded him, he is most proud of the U.S. Army Legion of Merit medal; two Presidential Meritorious Executive Rank Awards; one Presidential Distinguished Executive Rank Award; the National Public Service Award from the American Society of Public Administration (ASPA) and the National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA); the coveted Ewell T. Bartlett National Award for Humanity in Government; and the national "Making the King Holiday Award" from the Martin Luther King, Jr., Federal Holiday Commission for his assistance in making this holiday a reality; and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) national Equal Employment Opportunity Excellence Award for his achievements in EEO.
Currently he is a Principal of Lamon & Sherman Consulting, LLC, an investment and income replacement consulting firm; a Principal of The Sherman Group, a leadership/management consulting company; and a Director of Government Benefits and Information Services, Inc. (GBIS). He is the past Chairman of the Board of Lenbrook Foundation, Inc., a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) in Atlanta, Georgia. He also is a Director of the Auburn University Foundation (AUF); Chair of the AUF Real Estate Foundation; a Fellow in the National Academy of Public Administration and a Founding Director of One Georgia Bank.
Gordon is a native of Alabama, graduating from Auburn University with a B.S. degree. He received J.D. and LL.M. degrees, as well as a honorary LL.D. from Woodrow Wilson College of Law. He completed the Senior Managers in Government (SMG) program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He also completed the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
He is also associated with several other educational, professional, civic, service and volunteer organizations. He and his wife, Miriam, reside in Dunwoody, Georgia.
