Harry V. Lamon, Jr.


Harry V. Lamon Harry V. Lamon, Jr., a Principal of Lamon & Sherman Consulting, LLC, brings to the Firm over 40 years of experience in employee benefits and tax law. From March 1998 to June of 2001, Mr. Lamon worked as a Registered Investment Advisor with Palmer & Cay Investment Services and as a Senior Vice President of Palmer & Cay Consulting Group. Prior to that, Mr. Lamon was Of Counsel to Troutman Sanders, LLP in Atlanta. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Davidson College and received his law degree "With Distinction" from Emory University School of Law. He is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in Finance and Industry.

During the 1960's, Mr. Lamon took one of the leading cases, Holder v. United States, to the Supreme Court of the United States which struck down the Treasury Department's Anti-Kintner Regulations and allowed professionals, for the first time, to incorporate their practices and receive the same retirement benefits as their contemporaries in business corporations. Mr. Lamon also drafted the first Master Keogh Plan under HR-10 for The First National Bank of Atlanta in 1963 and was an active participant in the development of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) in 1973 and 1974. In 1975, Mr. Lamon was appointed by President Gerald Ford to represent the general public on The Advisory Council on Employee Welfare and Pension Benefit Plans of the U. S. Department of Labor, where he served until 1980. Following this service, he was appointed as a Consultant to the Executive Office of the President (OMB) and during 1980 developed Reorganization Plan #4 under which the Treasury Department and the Department of Labor, for the first time, were able to utilize the same reporting form (Form 5500) for the Public with respect to qualified retirement plans.

Mr. Lamon is a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, the American College of Employee Benefit Counsel, and the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law. He is a Life Member of both the American Law Institute and the American Bar Foundation, and is Past President of the American Bar Retirement Association. He has served as Chairman of the Tax Section of the State Bar of Georgia, and is a Life Member of the Atlanta Bar Association and the Atlanta Estate Planning Council. Mr. Lamon is a Founder and past President of the Southern Employee Benefits Conference and was awarded a Honorary Lifetime Membership by the Conference in 1999. He is also a founding Trustee and past President of the Southern Federal Tax Institute, Inc.

Mr. Lamon is a Life Member of the Metro Atlanta Salvation Army Advisory Board and is a Charter Member of the National Salvation Army Advisory Board, where he served as Chairman from 1991 to 1993. Mr. Lamon is also a Trustee Emeritus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, and is a Member of the Board of Visitors of the College for Officer Training of the Salvation Army in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mr. Lamon served as an Adjunct Professor at the Emory University School of Law from 1960 until 1980. He is also a member of the Bureau of National Affairs Employee Benefit Reporter Advisory Board and is a member of the bars of Georgia, the District of Columbia and The Supreme Court of the United States.

Mr. Lamon has received the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) designations from the American College and is a member of the American Society of Pension Actuaries. Mr. Lamon is also a Registered Representative with Lamon & Stern, Inc., and is a frequent speaker at employee benefits and estate planning seminars throughout the country. Mr. Lamon is married to the former Ada Morris of Atlanta, Ga. and has two children and four grandchildren.
